When the Florida Department of Law Enforcement report cleared the five officers involved in the Kofi Adu-Brempong shooting we were upset but believed an internal investigation might bring about some disciplinary action. Now it seems UPD has reinstated all but one of the officers involved in the shooting with no actions taken against them. Maybe there was a slap on the wrist for mishandling the situation, but we don’t know.
We don’t know because they acted on the findings of the investigation without releasing it to the public. How can an investigation be ongoing, but the
results implemented? UPD has kept the public out of this situation since the beginning. The Kofi shooting shouldn’t have been handled behind closed doors. If we had a campus police review board this information would be made available to the public every step of the way, and the officers’ rights to due process would still be protected.
The administration and UPD assured us justice would be transparent, but we only see the shady actions based on an internal investigation.
