About 20  middle and high school students attended YOUth Summit hosted by UF’s College Reach-Out Program, which helps disadvantaged youth prepare for college.

During the summit, students and their parents discussed students’ goals and sexual education.

“These sessions are topics that students and parents don’t communicate on,” said Bobby Welch, the director of the UF’s College Reach-Out Program, adding that he wanted both parties to realize that communication is vital.

“I can only say good things,” said Olivia Williams, who attended the summit with her two children. “They’re positive, and they give quick responses. They are very hands-on.”

Santa Fe College’s reach-out program also held a Junior Seminar that offered students information on college scholarships, loans and test-taking tips.

UF and Santa Fe College’s programs both provide year-round tutoring, mentoring and test preparation courses.

“I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Williams said.
