When two locals got “Team #01”-labeled badges Saturday morning, they thought it was a sign.

“We knew it was meant to be and something great would come from it,” Gainesville resident Lynette Wiggins said.

Wiggins and her husband, Shawn, won first place by beating about 30 teams at the third annual Gainesville’s Amazing Race for Tourism at the Westside Park Recreation Center, located at 1001 NW 34th St.

The event was coordinated by the Alachua County Hospitality Council and was intended to inform participants about local attractions, such as art galleries, theaters and parks, said Erica Chatman, a council member.

“It is to help people that have lived here for years and don’t know some of the great places Gainesville has to offer,” Chatman said, adding that CBS’ reality show, “The Amazing Race,” inspired the idea for the event.

Participants had to complete various tasks in pairs, including driving to Newberry, disc golfing and playing mini-baseball games.

The top three teams won prizes such as limousine rides, tickets and trips to nearby attractions.

“I am happy about the large turnout and hope people had a good time,” Chatman said.
