UF President Bernie Machen and other UF officials dedicated the Biomedical Sciences Building Tuesday.
The building’s innovative design is intended to encourage scientists of different colleges to work in teams, according to a UF press release.
The building’s work spaces are mostly open and lack the confined offices that characterize most laboratories. The building’s labs feature large windows that are supposed to make the environment more well-lit and comfortable.
Aside from promoting shared space, the open design is also expected to encourage the sharing of ideas, according to a press release.
The facility, which was completed in October after about three years of construction, will house research centers and programs such as the UF Diabetes Center of Excellence, the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease and the Rehabilitation Research Program.
The $90.5-million, eight-story building is located on the northeast corner of Center Drive and Mowry Road.
