Sharon McDow will be walking for a cure Saturday morning.

McDow, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in April 2004, will be participating in Gainesville’s Walk MS at the Southwest YMCA at 10 a.m. More than 200 people have registered for the event, and 17 teams have signed up to participate, according to Wendy Lucius, event coordinator of the North Florida Chapter of the National MS Society. Lucius said Saturday’s overall goal is to raise about $214,000.

UF organizations are responsible for a large part of money raised, Lucius said.

Pi Lambda Phi, a UF fraternity, has set a goal of $1,000 this year. Chris Johnston, team captain, expects about 35 brothers to participate in honor of their cook’s wife, who has MS.

For McDow, the walk lets her meet other people affected by the disease and share her story.

“Having MS is not something I would have chosen, but because of it I have met people and had experiences that have made me a richer person,” she said.
