Kofi Adu-Brempong is still recovering at Shands Cancer Hospital, but the hospital’s patient directory says otherwise.
Policies stemming from the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act lead to those like Adu-Brempong, who was admitted to the hospital while under police custody, being listed under an alias.
Many circumstances can lead to a patient’s admittance under an alias.
According to Shands spokeswoman Kim Rose, some of these circumstances include a personal request from the patient and a need to keep high-profile patients or victims of child abuse anonymous.
If a patient remains in the hospital after being released from police custody, the patient could still remain under an alias if the circumstance calls for it.
One such circumstance is the presence of an impending investigation.
As the students and administrators await the results of an investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, UF spokeswoman Janine Sikes weighed in on Adu-Brempong’s recovery.
“The university certainly is happy that Kofi is on his way to recovery,” she said.
