Recently, the city of Gainesville’s Office of Equal Opportunity has brought to light many local establishments that are in violation of the city’s discrimination ordinance. These businesses frequently sponsor promotional activities designed to specifically attract females, giving preference to one gender over the other.
These activities violate the discrimination ordinance by granting women free or cheap alcoholic drinks and admission, while continuing to charge men. In Wednesday’s paper, Dana Rogers made good points in favor of this issue, speaking about the vulnerability placed on women after binge drinking in an allotted time frame.
If that doesn’t bother you, imagine your professor granting extra credit to women only. Does that seem fair? When a group is blatantly discriminated against, everyone suffers. One important thing to keep in mind with this issue: The discrimination ordinance only protects citizens from drink specials aimed at a certain population — everyone should be on a level playing field.
