Big Brothers Big Sisters of Mid-Florida is bowling to keep its doors open.
The organization needs to make at least $40,000 at the Gators Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser Friday and Saturday to stay open, according to Paul Halpern, the organization’s executive director.
Halpern added the doors wouldn’t shut right away if the organization failed to meet its goal.
He said if the funds aren’t raised he will work with the board of directors to try to come up with a different plan to eliminate the debt.
The first night of the bowling tournament, which will take place at Alley Katz Corner at 3705 SW 42nd Ave. from 9:30 p.m. to 2 a.m., is for UF students only.
Saturday’s event will start at noon and end at 6 p.m. and is open to everyone.
Bowling is free. However, each bowler must arrange a minimum of five sponsors on the event’s Web site.
Each sponsor must pledge a minimum of 15 cents per bowling pin. After the teams play two games, each player’s highest score is taken.
Those who raise $75 will win free food and a T-shirt.
With $250 in pledges, bowlers win a variety of gift certificates.
At the $500 level, bowlers win tickets to local entertainment or sporting event.
Top prizesfor those who raise the most money include a TV, an iPod Touch, diamond earrings, a trip for two to the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek and several others.
Proceeds will be used to couple at-risk children 6 to 17 years old with a mentor, said Beth Williams, co-chair of the event.
Halpern said the cost of matching bigs and littles ranges from $800 to $1,200 per pair.
Those interested in participating can visit the event’s Web site to choose a bowling date and time, sign up team members or register pledge donations at http://www.gatorbowlforkidssake.com.
