In honor of International Women’s Day, “Half the Sky Live” will premiere today at 7:30 p.m. at Gainesville Cinema 14.
The interactive event, which broadcast live Feb. 11 in New York City, is being rebroadcast by Cooperative Assistance and Relief Everywhere, Inc., a humanitarian organization that fights global poverty, especially pertaining to women.
The event will also include a showing of “Woineshet,” a 30-minute film about an Ethiopian girl who triumphs over violence and discrimination, as well as music and a discussion panel.
Pulitzer Prize winner Sheryl WuDunn, co-author of “Half the Sky,” the book on which the movie is based, will lead the discussion.
Tickets for the event cost $12.50, and a percentage of ticket sales will go to support CARE’s work across the globe, said Giulia McPherson, Advocacy Alliances manager for the organization.
CARE will also be advocating for the International Violence Against Women Act, which would address violence against females and add prevention and response measures across U.S. foreign assistance programs, according to CARE’s Web site.
