Vigil illuminate the struggles of eating disorder victims

When Jennifer Goetz moved to Gainesville five years ago, she decided it was time to take charge.

Goetz, a first-year medical student, was battling anorexia.

"When I was no longer a minor, I realized that if I didn't take control, then I was never going to live the healthy life that I deserved," Goetz said.

Goetz was one of about 15 students who braved the cold Wednesday night with candles in hand at Lights of Hope, a vigil to remember those who have died from an eating disorder and reach out to those who are struggling.

"People with eating disorders isolate themselves from friends and families," said Heather Marees, an outreach assistant for GatorWell. "This event, Lights of Hope, is about getting the message out there that treatment is available."

The students listened and some shared stories about their experiences with eating disorders outside Orange & Brew.

GatorWell organized the event with UF Department of Recreational Sports, Women's Leadership Council, Accent and the UF Panhellic and Interfraternity councils.
