Earlier this afternoon I learned of the new lows campus politics can reach at our university. As you may know, our campus was polluted today with a hateful and bitter message.
Fliers were produced containing a symbol of intolerance that the world turned its back to more than six decades ago. The Unite Party does not tolerate these acts and does not stand for such tasteless propaganda.
These fliers represent bigotry, racism and hatred — three values that have no place in our society.
We would appreciate it if the Holocaust were not exploited in underground and deceptive campaign tactics that turn community members against one another for the purpose of political gain.
The pattern we have seen in this election cycle shows us that some people out there think negative campaigning can result in success at the polls on Election Day.
There are some commonalities found in both recent flier distributions: They have been critical of the Unite Party (whether directly or indirectly), the fliers listed a student organization name that does not exist and lastly, the messages were unacceptable.
Today, we challenge our competitors and the Student Body to hold themselves to the highest moral standards. Negative campaigning is bad campaigning. Our Student Body comes from a variety of backgrounds, and it is this diversity that makes our campus community so special.
In the years I have been at this university, I have never seen something so vile and purely disgusting take place in Student Government elections.
I, along with my party, call upon everyone involved in these elections to condemn this attack and to show that we are, indeed, the leaders of our school.
I challenge the Student Body to join me as we take a united stance against negative campaign tactics and demand more from the political process on our campus.
