While some Gainesville residents are looking for love in people this weekend, others may find that love in a different type of companion.
PetSmart will be hosting its annual pet adopt-a-thon Second Chance for Love this weekend in all of its stores. It’s held an adoption similar to this since 1987.
The PetSmart store, located on 3736 SW Archer Road, will be working with UF’s Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity as well as Helping Hands Pet Rescue of Newberry.
The adopt-a-thon is scheduled for Friday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The majority of the pets available for adoption come from the animal shelter in Alachua County, said Robert Ryan, a Helping Hands Pet Rescue representative.
In order to adopt an animal, each potential owner must complete a 30-minute application and interview process.
Upon approval, the pet can go home with its new owner, Ryan said.
Adoption fees range from $50 to $300, which cover the costs of all animals being spayed or neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, tested for heartworms, dewormed and given flea preventative medication.
“Participating in such an event is a tremendous opportunity to really make a difference for a fantastic cause,” said Craig Colsky, service chairman of the fraternity.
Colsky said he is excited at the prospect of finding homes for these pets in need.
“What a better way to spend Valentine’s Day than by saving an animal’s life,” said Matt Friedman, president of Alpha Epsilon Pi.
