After the recent catastrophe in Haiti, it has been amazing to see the result from the Student Body and the rest of the country’s helpers. It is becoming visible — the impact a group of people, especially a group of Gators, can make. But it is disheartening to see that it took a disaster as big as a 7.0-magnitude earthquake to spark this.
Now is a great opportunity for UF to show the world we can help people in all cases, whether they be disaster-stricken or simply needing to talk. Before this earthquake, the people of Haiti needed just as much help, but we never talked about it. Now, as Haiti is floundering in another problem, other countries have declared: We will stand beside you in your most desperate hour.
While it is great to stand behind those who are in their most desperate hour, we also need to stand behind them in their normal hours.
Have we done this with Haiti? As we strive to be the best we can, let us stand behind all people when they are in need of help, and, more importantly, when they don’t need help.
