A wanted man was arrested after he tried to escape police in a high-speed chase in a stolen car late Tuesday night.

Claude Stephens, 41, drove away with the car when he saw it parked and running outside a gas station, according to a Gainesville Police report.

The car’s owner immediately called police, who ran the vehicle’s description over the radio.

Officer Anton Lipski noticed a car matching the description and tried to pull it over for a traffic stop. The driver sped up and turned into a residential neighborhood to escape.

An Alachua County warrant was out for his arrest for violating parole. He has previously been charged with auto theft, burglary and dealing in stolen property, and Stephens is a registered sex offender.
