Dog Wood Park re-opens after completing renovations

Tate sprung from the ground and started running after his friend, Abbie. He chased her around a tree and through a mud bog.

When he finally caught up to her, he pinned her to the ground and started to bite her neck.

Tate, a 4-month-old husky, was playing with Abbie, a 12-month-old Doberman mix, at Dog Wood Park's grand re-opening this weekend, an event that celebrated Valentine's Day and the park's new ownership.

But Tate and Abbie don't have owners yet.

They were at the park Saturday with Second Chance Farms, a Gainesville pet rescue organization.

"When dogs are crated they act crazy, and people can't see their real personality," said Nell Rosenberg, a volunteer for Second Chance. "Here it's fun for the dog."

The park's owners, Rachel Thorton and Kip Adkins, said hosting the pet adoptions was very important to them.

They bought the park in December to restore and expand the 15 acres of free-roaming fun.

Admission to the park was free this weekend for new visitors to see all the changes being made.

They've installed new benches and hammocks and plan to build a gazebo and fire pit.

Guests were treated to grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, and there was a raffle for free and discounted memberships.

Sabrina and Miguel Castillo were visiting the park for the first time with their two dogs, Jolie and Taffy.

It was 50 degrees out, but the temperature didn't keep the dogs from playing fetch in the parks aquifer-fed pond.

There is also a natural pet food shop at the park, and they plan on starting a dog boarding and grooming service later this year.

Thorton said she was excited about the weekend turnout.

"It's been six or seven years since the parking lot has been this full," she said.
