“Oedipus the King,” a more than 2,500-year-old play, will begin a nine-show run at the Nadine McGuire Black Box Theatre today.
“This show reintroduces people to a classic,” said C.J. Roell, co-stage manager. “They know it, but it is different to actually come and experience it. It is old yet still powerful today.”
This version of the play is not identical to those done in the past, though, said Yanci Bukovec, the director of the play. Instead, he decided to reveal the ending of the story right away.
“I am using a contemporary approach by showing the ending first. It’s more accessible to modern audiences,” he said. “But I leave them questioning how it happened and how the story will unfold.”
Bukovec said he feels this is an important production to put on and for people to see.
“[‘Oedipus’] is a classic. All of the classics are the building blocks of what we are today,” he said. “This production is the root of theater. It is how theater began.”
Tickets cost $13 for students through the University Box Office, located at the end of the Reitz Union Colonnade.
