This letter is in response to Tommy Maple’s column in Wednesday’s Alligator. The reason we love aging rockers is very simple: There has been little or no good innovative music since about 1980, roughly the “disco” period. There will not be another time period like the late ‘50s through the late ‘70s that produces such a prodigious amount of great music. You can rail about record sales, but remember, in Elvis’ time, 50,000 units was a huge record. Most of the talented, successful younger bands will quickly tell you of their influences, and I’d bet they’ll name the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and the Allman Brothers — just to name a few of my favorites.
