When you’re wearing metallic gold Christian Louboutin pumps, who needs a plot line?

The 1 minute, 19 second trailer—released in mid-December offers a taste of what to look forward to in the long-awaited sequel. Although the clip does make it known that the girls are back (as is the fashion), it steered clear of any display of what the movie is about. But despite concealing the plot, which was far from the case with the original film’s trailer, this one simply stirs the usual thrill and giddiness that comes along with hearing Sarah Jessica Parker’s voiceover and an orchestrated version of the “Sex and the City” theme song.
Flashing a series of New York City sights to the beats of Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind,” the trailer tells viewers this summer is time to “Carrie On.” Now, it can be argued that using a pun with Carrie’s name is quite cliche, especially considering it was done with the first film (“to get Carried away”), but the silliness only adds to the fun of it all.
The trailer highlights the friendships, the fun and, naturally, the fashion. It gives you everything you’ve been waiting for: a look at Carrie in her closet, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) baking cupcakes with a baby on her hip, Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) happily married and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) — who would have guessed this one — sexing it up with a hot stranger. The best thing about the trailer — aside from the clothes — is that is focuses less on the ordinary SATC drama and more on the cherished friendships between the four girls we’ve all come to know and love.
Inspired by Candace Bushnell’s novel, the series launched on HBO in 1998 and ran for six seasons. The episodes are now replayed on TBS, WGN and other cable channels, which have cut out explicit sexual content aired in the original episodes. But the 12-year run with the girls has made fans feel as though they’re just as good of friends with each character as the characters are with each other. And the new trailer ends with a shot of the famous four strutting in flowy, fabulous outfits on vacation in the desert as Parker’s familiar voice says, “Sometimes you just have to get away with the girls.” It inspires the perfect, most fabulous summer vacation you could ever imagine.
But let’s get down to what really matters: the fashion. The trailer shows Carrie in 14 different spectacular outfits, and even though the beloved Carrie necklace is nowhere in sight, she does wear everything from glitzy jewelry to adorable headpieces, marvelous Manolo Blahniks and even a simple J’adore Dior T-shirt. Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha are all in striking styles as well, each outfit exemplifying how meticulously one ages as a movie star.
Tabloids have exploited a few spoilers surrounding the reappearance of Smith (Jason Lewis), whom Samantha split with in the last movie, Miranda’s unexpected career move, Charlotte’s struggles as a mother and even a possible cheating scandal with Big (Chris Noth). But perhaps leaving the plot out of the trailer is a good thing; it just leaves us wanting more.
So shake up some cosmopolitans and rent every season and the first movie to catch up on the girls because no matter how cute and exciting the trailer may be, we’ve unfortunately got five months until we can slip on our stilettos, book our tickets on Fandango and Carrie on.
