When incoming journalism freshmen purchase a laptop, they won’t have to debate between a Mac or PC.

The UF College of Journalism and Communications said Tuesday evening at a UF townhall meeting that it will begin requiring freshman journalism students to purchase Macintosh computers in fall 2010.

Current journalism students will not be required to purchase the technology package, which includes a Mac or MacBook Pro laptop computer, an audio recorder and a digital camera with audio and video, but could be eligible for discounts through the college.

David Carlson, the executive director at the UF Center for Media Innovation and Research, said the requirement will not apply to other majors in the college.
