Invisible Children org. wins $1m, UF chapter recieves none

Invisible Children has taken the top spot to win $1 million in Chase Bank’s Community Giving Facebook promotion.

Chase posted the final votes early Saturday morning. Invisible Children, a non-profit that works to aid children in war-torn Northern Uganda, was at the top of the leaderboard with 123,990 votes.

Stephanie Alman, president of the UF chapter of Invisible Children, said she was proud of the work supporters did during the contest.

“Everybody worked really hard and all the hard work paid off,” she said.

Alman explained that the UF chapter of Invisible Children would not receive any of the contest money.

“We don’t receive money from Invisible Children headquarters. We raise money from our own schools and we do fundraising on a smaller, grassroots level,” Alman said.

They narrowly beat Isha Foundation Inc who had 122,742 votes. Isha works to provide healthcare and community development in rural communities around the world.

To Write Love on her Arms placed third with 96,145 votes. The organization helps people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide.

Invisible Children announced Wednesday it would donate $100,000 to support relief work in Haiti.

UF Invisible Children recently teamed up with the student group Hope for Haiti to raise money for the relief work after the earthquake.

Jennifer Oxilien, public relations chair of Hope for Haiti, said she was excited when she heard Invisible Children would donate the money.

“I have always liked them, but now I have a whole new level of respect for them,” she said.

Oxilien pointed out that since the earthquake, people on campus have come together and now have a bond.

“There is just a love for humanity. You feel like you’re part of everything. Like you’re actually doing something. And that feels great,” she said.

Charities that finish in second through sixth place each get $100,000.
