Students continued to hunt for jobs and internships during the Spring Career Showcase at the O’Connell Center Wednesday.

About 4,500 students attended the showcase this year, down from 6,885 last year, said Nadene Reynolds, the assistant director for public relations at the Career Resource Center.

“The numbers are lower this year, but the students that did come were exposed to many opportunities,” Reynolds said.

About  2,000 attended the nontechnical day Tuesday, which included accounting, communications and health care companies.

More than 2,500 students, both undergraduate and graduate, attended the technical day Wednesday in search of computer science, engineering and construction jobs.

Students with technical majors normally are more confident when hunting for jobs and forming career plans, making them more likely to come to the showcase Wednesday, Reynolds said.

She said students searching for jobs and internships should be confident and have an open mind.

“Students should realize that companies concentrate more on skills, rather than majors,” Reynolds said.

Students who missed the showcase can create an account with Gator CareerLink, an online database where UF students and alumni can search for internship opportunities, volunteer work and jobs, Reynolds said.

Daniel Rodriguez, a recruiter for American Express, graduated from UF in 2008 with a degree in computer engineering.

“You have to know your resume, and you have to connect with the companies,” Rodriguez said. “It’s more about communication than just a good GPA.”
