Dream Deferred
Dream Deferred
Five years ago, Sergio came to the United States to provide for his family.

Sergio came to the United States to work as a roofer to support his family back home in southern Mexico.

Every Sunday night he goes to the Gainesville Community Ministry and serves food to those in need with his church, Iglesia Evangelica Bautista.

“One learns a lot doing that, being around people who sometimes need a plate of food, a glass of water, clothes or simply a hug,” he said. “And I enjoy doing it without expecting anything in return.”

A few months ago, Sergio’s illegality was exposed when he was given a ticket for driving without a license. Now he is in mediation with the U.S. government to determine whether he will be deported.

If he is deported, he leaves behind a girlfriend and a tight-knit church family, which has helped him over the years.

“God has taught me so many things, and I’ll keep doing them for as long as I’m here,” he said.
