Jeremy Foley, Florida's athletic director, announced in a press release Saturday that Urban Meyer will be resigning as head coach after the Sugar Bowl.
"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," said Meyer in the press release. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to re-evaluate my priorities of faith and family."
"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family."
Meyer was checked into a hospital the day after the Gators' 32-13 loss to Alabama in the Southeastern Conference Championship Game on Dec. 5.
Meyer told his players in a team meeting Saturday evening, one player said.
The player said, "It was sad but I don't really want to comment on it. He was acting kinda wierd at practice today."
In his five seasons as head coach of the Gators, Meyer has led them to two SEC titles and two national titles.
His overall record as UF's coach was 56-10.
