A group of marketing students at UF is hosting a fundraiser for Gainesville Pet Rescue at 101 Cantina tonight from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Outside the cantina, an area will be set up for ordering drinks and socializing. If people want to have a full sit-down dinner, they will be able to eat inside the cantina.
Happy hour drink specials will also be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Gainesville Pet Rescue will receive 10 percent of all the money made during the event, said Nicole Fernandez, a senior marketing major who helped to organize the event.
The money raised at the event is going to be used to collect dogs and cats that are scheduled to be euthanized and give them the upkeep necessary for them to be adopted, she said.
The animals will have their shots updated, and those requiring surgery will receive it, Fernandez said.
She explained that the fundraiser is a part of a project she is working on for her sales management class.
At the beginning of the project, she was assigned to a group of six students and a pet rescue center. The group then met with Cheryl Swymen, the executive director of Gainesville Pet Rescue, to determine what she wanted done to raise awareness and funds.
The group is also working on organizing other events to raise more money for Gainesville Pet Rescue.
“We want people to know that there are other options out there besides pet shops, because these pets really need it,” Fernandez said.
