In comparison to finding a place to sleep or food to eat, oral hygiene isn't a top priority for homeless people.
The Pre-dental American Student Dental Association wants to change that.
Thursday night, members of the Pre-dental ASDA served dinner to the homeless and gave a presentation on good oral hygiene at the St. Francis House.
About 30 shelter residents had hot meals provided by the members of the Pre-dental ASDA and watched a presentation on proper dental care, such as appropriate ways to brush and floss.
"We wanted to reach out to a part of the community that is often neglected," said Alex Samuel.
Samuel, who is on the board of directors for the Pre-dental ASDA, wanted to spread awareness of the importance of maintaining good oral hygiene and preventing serious medical conditions.
Rich Miller, a St. Francis House resident, paid close attention to the presentation.
"It's hard to get dental care," Miller said. "More work needs to be done for the homeless out here."
