March of Dimes to hold chicken-wing-eating contest

Chicken wings and babies don't mix - unless it's for the Rattle Battle Wing Bowl, a chicken-wing-eating contest to raise money for the March of Dimes' March for Babies.

The Chain Reaction Youth Leadership Council will host the second annual contest at Gator's Dockside tonight at 6:30.

Students and administrators from five local high schools will participate in the event.

"There is going to be a lot of excitement and a lot of fun leading up to the event as students are coming in," said Betsy Trent, the executive director of Northwest Florida March of Dimes.

Contestants will be making a grand entrance, stepping out of a limo while greeted by music provided by Kiss 105.3 and the cheers of encouraging students, Sussman said.

"The contestants will be wearing bibs, war paint and last year one of them even did a cartwheel when they were announced," she said. "Basically, we are just trying to make it really fun for everyone."

The event will be raising money both through ticket sales and through sponsors.

Last year, between the contestants and supporters, 25,000 wings were eaten within an hour and $7,000 was raised for the March of Dimes, Sussman said.

She said they hope to raise $10,000 this year.

Tickets to the event will be sold for $10 in advance at participating high schools and at the March of Dimes office. They will also be sold at the door for $12.

"We hope everyone can come out," Trent said. "There is going to be a whole lot of barbecue on a lot of people's faces."
