Breast-shaped cupcakes raise cancer awareness

The phrase "Save second base!" could be heard throughout Turlington Plaza Friday when one of UF's Relay for Life teams raised breast cancer awareness and served cupcakes resembling breasts.

"It's a funny idea to balance a serious disease," said Jacki Klutcharch, a senior public relations major and Event Co-Chair for the team.

The team spent about $39 on cupcakes and additional items for Friday's event. They bought 100 cupcakes from Publix, along with frosting and assorted additions like sprinkles and chocolate chips.

"This is the second year we've done this," Klutcharch said. "I'm not sure how it started but it's great for marketing purposes."

The cupcakes were not sold for profit but the team did accept donations.

"Our purpose right now it not to raise money," Klutcharch said. " It's to raise awareness."

However, they managed to raise about $200 in donations. They raised about $89 at a similar event they held Monday.

Also in attendance was Emmanuela Prevolis, a friend of Klutcharch's and a breast cancer survivor.

"I was diagnosed in ninth grade," she said. "It was a benign tumor in my right breast. The doctors said it was the size of a baseball." She still keeps a bright attitude despite having cancer. "Whenever I do Relay for Life, no one expects me to be a survivor."

Prevolis had surgery to remove the initial tumor, but is still threatened by the disease. "I've had three tumors since then. Every six months I go back for tests."

Prevolis said she does everything she can to help raise cancer awareness, and not just because she is a survivor.

"I've been doing [Relay for Life] since before I was diagnosed," she said." My father has pancreatic cancer and was diagnosed when I was in elementary school."
