While we didn't know that anyone still watched the MTV Video Music Awards (the last time we remember watching it, it involved strawberry yogurt with rainbow sprinkles and the privilege of staying up late), it came to our attention that a certain atrocity occurred on last night's show.
After checking Facebook at work, we had some vague indication (or approximately 700 notifications) that Kanye West acted like Kanye West, and apparently, outrage was the result. Being responsible journalists, we quickly flocked to PerezHilton.com to see for ourselves. Being understandably intrigued, we quickly YouTubed Taylor Swift's winning video for "You Belong with Me."
The video itself is an atrocity. It follows a mute girl who is in love with her next door neighbor and can only communicate with him through handwritten signs. The girl tries to steal the boy from his girlfriend who does not share their mutual love for handwritten signs. The girl says she isn't going to prom because she has to study (presumably chemistry, because she's wearing a shirt with the periodic table on it), but shows up anyway. She then wins the heart of the quarterback by removing her ponytail and glasses a la "She's All That."
Kanye West, evidently enraged by the atrocity that was occurring on his cranium (crop circles? Cool Dr. Money from Nickelodeon's "My Brother and Me"?), decided it was permissible to jump on stage and declare Beyoncé the "real" winner of Best Music Video.
Beyoncé's video is undoubtedly superior, but we would like to denounce Kanye West for both hurting that poor girl's feelings and wasting our valuable time at work.
We also have to wonder: Did Kanye already forget about the "Fishsticks" episode of "South Park"?
