I'd like to express my concern with some of the facts represented in yesterday's Alligator regarding recent happenings in Student Government.
I find it quite disheartening that the Orange and Blue Party has jumped at the opportunity to blame the Unite Party instead of congratulating the student body on a job well done. The removal and subsequent reinstatement of The New York Times has been the finest display of democracy I have seen as a student here at UF.
An extremely difficult decision was made during the budget process with the mindset of fiscal responsibility that was thought to be in the best interest of students. The students voiced their concern, which allowed Treasurer Maryam Laguna to adjust the budget accordingly, once again in the best interests of students. My problem with this would be the theatrics of Sen. Jonathan Ossip bashing the Unite Party in the press.
The proper avenue for change would have been visiting Laguna in her regularly scheduled office hours and talking to her personally - not bringing the issue to press as a political ploy.
This was not about the Orange and Blue, Unite or Progress parties - this was about doing what is right for the student body.
I hope we will not have to continue to be subjected to these negative campaign tactics from Sen. Ossip and his party leading up to the fall elections. I am confident that the Unite Party will stick to its positive message and continue to lead SG and the entire student body into a positive, new direction.
