While Student Body President Jordan Johnson can provide Fabulous Rides for those who have imbibed too much, he can't prevent his fellow SGers from driving his agenda into the ground.
Cabinet Secretary William Sedgwick was pulled over for drunken driving near the Applebee's on Northwest 13th Street Tuesday night.
Perhaps he needs a crash course in civic responsibility to keep him from plowing into people who are just trying to eat good in the neighborhood.
We recognize that nobody's perfect, but when you're involved with government, your demeanor should be pretty close to it.
We're sure that Sedgwick is a nice guy. His escapades, however, are a slap in the face to Johnson.
First off, drinking and driving produces a dangerous cocktail of consequences. It puts everybody at risk when someone is intoxicated behind the wheel.
Secondly, Sedgwick's actions undermine Johnson's crusade against drunken driving by making it seem like he can't even keep his coterie of compatriots in line.
Third, Sedgwick failed several sobriety tests, including following a pen light and standing on one leg. Who gets that drunk on a Tuesday?
Johnson has made positive steps in reducing the number of DUIs among UF students. It's unfortunate that his own cabinet members can't follow his good example.
Sedgwick will learn his lesson, as he's bound to face some serious consequences. Let his fabulous ride into the sunset serve as a reminder of the consequences of drinking and driving.
