As a student at UF, I am distressed to see that Aramark, the company contracted to provide food services, has seen fit to raise the prices charged by franchises in the Reitz Union and elsewhere on campus above those charged at off-campus franchise locations, especially while students are increasingly feeling financially crunched. Where is the oversight?
I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking the students should have a say in whether they ought to be price-gouged as a result of university contracts.
Upon further research, I found that students aren't the only ones who are losing out because of Aramark. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers, an organization of agricultural workers based in southwest Florida, has sought a penny-per-pound pay increase for the tomato pickers who supply Aramark. That the company has so far failed to make any response is unsurprising, given their attitude toward students.
Aramark is not working for the students, and it is not working for Florida workers.
