Divers locate body of driver in Paynes Prairie waters Thursday

After nearly a day and a half of searching, authorities found the body of a driver involved in Wednesday's accident near Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.

According to Lt. Patrick Riordan of the Florida Highway Patrol, dive teams from the Alachua and Marion County sheriff's offices recovered the body of Thomas Sherman, 48, of Ocala at about 11 a.m. Thursday from the swamp water.

The divers, Riordan said, had to feel their way through the murky water.

FHP has also identified the other person involved in Wednesday's accident as Amy Hodges, 37, of Gainesville.

The accident, which occurred around 4 p.m. Wednesday, resulted from Sherman's vehicle hitting Hodges' from behind, causing Sherman to lose control and plow through a guardrail and land in the water below.

Authorities have notified the victim's family, and the immediate cause of death has not yet been determined, Riordan said.
