If you spend a day helping others this year, Disney will let you into the happiest place on earth for free.
Announced on Tuesday, "Give a Day, Get a Disney Day" gives people a single-day admission pass to one Disney park if they sign up to volunteer with one of 70,000 non-profits through the Disney Web site.
This is a win-win situation. Anything that gets people to give back to their communities is awesome, and once Disney has do-gooders inside its walls, it can overcharge them for Mickey Ice Cream Bars and mediocre faux-Italian food at Epcot.
Best way to ride out a recession, ever.
Last year Disney had a promotion that would allow people to get a single-day ticket for free on their birthdays. We like that the company is making people give back this year to get the same reward.
We do, however, think the two promotions should be combined.
Disney should give out free birthday tickets and allow people to earn a second ticket through volunteering.
No one wants to make a lonely ascent to the top of Splash Mountain.
Regardless, Disney's initiative will introduce many people to volunteer work for the first time. While we think it's sad that some people might only do charity work to get a reward, there will be people who get hooked on the warm, fuzzy feeling that comes with giving back because of the Disney promotion.
And that makes us feel all warm and fuzzy, too.
