During last Tuesday/s Student Government Senate meeting, I was rather disturbed by certain comments that were made asking the Alligator to not report the events that transpired. Indeed, the reporter was specifically singled out and told to withhold publishing that the majority party voted down a string of proposed ethics legislation when they had done just that.
Although I am just a replacement senator serving the honorable constituents of District D, I feel I must continually demur these alarming statements. Senate is not an opaque body of government, albeit there are many who attempt to push it in that direction, and the Alligator not only has the right but the responsibility to publish what was discussed, deliberated and determined at the meeting. Complaints against this paper seem to be frequently resonating during Senate meetings and have become more and more appalling. The Alligator should not have to put up with those attempting to bash the paper/s journalistic integrity. The Alligator should continue to report the facts, no matter what.
Grievances against the paper then are grievances against fact. Obviously the majority party has some soul-searching to do if they are not complacent about facts discussed during Senate meetings.
