It's practically a scientific fact that women have a sexual fascination with musicians.
Exhibit A: My mother, a woman so conservative about sex that I thought my birth may have been through the Immaculate Conception. But give her tickets to a Poison concert and she'll shimmy into her skin-tight leather pants and snap on a lacy, red bra before Bret Michaels can even sing the words "talk dirty to me."
Then there is my 15-year-old sister, who still thinks boys have cooties, but melts any time a Jonas brother's curly locks bounce across the Disney Channel screen.
And finally, there is me. I'm not crazy about a famous rocker, or a tween pop star, but the first time I heard my boyfriend play, I instantly wanted him. His Beatles T-shirt, self-assurance and 12-string acoustic guitar set off a "great sex!" flag in my brain.
So what is the appeal in men that can play music? Take away the instruments and the sappy lyrics, and aren't they just normal men?
Actually, no. One time, I was on a date with a guy, and as I stepped into his car I almost crushed his guitar strings that he had "coincidentally" placed in my seat. "Watch the strings!" he exclaimed. "I have to restring my baby when I get home!"
Just like a Gucci bag, women can smell a phony. It's not sexy to boast about skills that probably don't exist. And if a man has to learn to play a guitar to get girls, he probably doesn't have the confidence to rock out anyway. What makes a musician sexy is his talent, and talent takes depth.
To women, the depth that shines through the music parallels with the passion he'll have in the relationship.
From a realistic sense, to be attracted to a musician seems a little silly. A muscular construction worker with a body that promises to be her bodyguard and highlights his ability to handle her in bed should be more appealing to a woman's eye. Yet rockers with their teenage-girl sized jeans, are the most sought after men on the earth, and it's due to their appearance on the inside. The sensitive lyrics and passionate guitar playing indicate that musicians make great lovers. If they can make a piece of wood sing that way, imagine what they could do to you.
Once, I had a huge fight in a romantic cabin on Valentine's Day with the musician I fell for. After slamming doors and fuming through moments of silence, he took his guitar by the lake, and I trailed behind him.
He played a song that he had written for me, and as much as I tried to fight it, my feelings of anger quickly vanished. It may sound really cliché or even cheesy, but what happened in the bedroom afterward definitely was not.
