Former GPD officer receives probation for misconduct

Former Gainesville Police Department Officer William Billings, who embezzled from GPD and solicited prostitutes on the job, has received his sentence.

After a judge found him guilty of scheming to defraud and official misconduct, Billings received 24 months probation and will not be allowed to enter Gainesville and Alachua County/s mapped prostitution areas, said State Attorney/s Office spokesman Spencer Mann.

Billings will also need to take an HIV test and provide a DNA sample to the court.

Mann said Billings will have to pay restitution to the state by giving back the amount of money that he stole through falsifying pay role and for the cost of the investigation.

Capt. Lynne Benck, who led the investigation, said Billings stole over $6,000.

In total, he will pay more than $14,500.

A GPD internal affairs report stated that 14 women said they had sex with Billings for money while he was on duty.
