I was enjoying Jon Silman's article about country music recently (Country music offers support, advice for all stages of life - July 16).
The opening line was, "It is the year of open-mindedness." Skip to the first song he describes, however, and you'll find, "He doesn't care what she looks like, or if she's too fat or old."
Excuse me? The seventh song offers this description of drunken antics: "We start bumming smokes, hitting on fat chicks and sometimes end up in bed next to someone who should never come out in the daytime." Nice open-mindedness, Jon.
Years ago when I first came to UF, I saw stenciled signs in stairwells saying "NO FAT CHICKS!"
I was speechless. Then I saw a car full of guys drive past a woman on a bus bench, and they screamed the same thing out the window as they sped past. She was visibly devastated, and I was sickened.
I could stoop to the same level and accuse these guys of covering for some sort of sexual dysfunction but that wouldn't be open-minded.
Jon states, "If we can get past our initial prejudices, we may discover something beautifully relevant."
Well, guess what, Jon? People come in all sizes and shapes. Find a more intelligent and humane way to express yourself. You might just meet someone nice.
