Two UF students were recognized Friday for their efforts in promoting multicultural awareness with residents on campus.

Katherine Warwick and Harsha Deoghare were awarded by the UF Department of Housing and Residence Education Multicultural Student Award for their diverse programs within UF's residence facilities.

"The award recognizes student leaders who expand what they offer as RAs to their residents," said Jen Gresley, residence director.

Warwick, a civil engineering major from Melbourne, Fla., is the Jennings Hall resident assistant. Her program, "Rice and Beans at Hotel Rwanda," demonstrated the significance of basic foods in each part of the world. In her program, she provided rice and beans for 40 people at a cost of $6 to allow her residents to acknowledge the impact of their food consumption.

Deoghare, a doctoral candidate in public health and rehabilitation science from India, is the president of the Graduate and Family Housing Mayors' Council. He received the award for his work in aiding international residents in their transition to life at UF.

The UF Department of Housing and Residence Education Multicultural Student Award recognizes student leaders who go above and beyond to promote multiculturalism on campus.

The award is given out annually to representatives from both the residents hall and graduate and family housing by a five-member committee.

This year, eight candidates were considered for the award, Gresley said.

"I find that these students are dedicated towards going beyond their duties," she said. "Diversity is something we need to learn more about, and we learn through experience. That is what these students are dedicated to."
