LifeSouth gives a pint of ice cream for a pint of blood

Giving blood never tasted so good.

This week, local LifeSouth Community Blood Centers are offering a free pint of Blue Bell ice cream in exchange for blood donations to cope with the summer slump.

"UF students account for 20 to 25 percent of our donations," LifeSouth community development coordinator Clay Gibbons said. "And when school lets out for the summer, we notice a significant decline."

After donating, participants will receive a coupon that is redeemable at stores carrying Blue Bell ice cream.

The 'Pint for a Pint' drive will run through Sunday at LifeSouth's two Gainesville locations, 4039 Newberry Road and 1221 NW 13th St., and at the Alachua donation center.

Rosemarie Gann, who has donated blood in the area for 30 years, stopped by a local center to give blood Monday.

"I want my donations to be sent to the children," Gann said.

As for her free pint of ice cream, Gann was pleased but wasn't aware of the promotion beforehand. "I would have come anyway," she said, "but it makes it a good day to come."
