The Santa Fe College softball team claimed both games in its doubleheader for the fifth consecutive time Saturday, this time against Palm Beach Community College.
The Saints (43-5, 16-4 Mid-Florida Conference), No. 3 in the Florida Community College Athletic Association Poll, took down the Panthers 2-1 in Game 1 and 4-3 in Game 2.
In Game 1, the Saints' pitching was solid, with freshman Kimberly Squires (22-3, 0.93 ERA) allowing 1 run on two hits and six total strikeouts.
With the game tied, Squires helped herself out at the plate, bringing sophomore outfielder Brittany Cannon home with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1.
The Saints did not leave the score tied for long. In the fifth inning, Cannon scored the winning run from third base on a passed ball.
SFC's offense was also solid, with sophomore second baseman Nadirah Nesfield going 2 for 3. Cannon also went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs, and freshman Morgan Fortson was 1 for 2 with a double.
Game 2 got off to a rocky start. Freshman pitcher Alexandra Savage gave up 3 runs in three innings.
In the second inning, Cannon brought two runners in with a double and finished the game 2 for 4 from the plate. The Panthers answered by taking the lead with a two-out double.
Down 1 run with two outs in the fifth inning, Erika Garcia tied the game with a double. In the sixth, freshman outfielder Lawna Hunter singled in Cannon to win the game.
Ashley Schmitt (19-2, 0.74 ERA) allowed no runs in four innings and earned the win for Game 2.
