Santa Fe defeats Central Florida, moves closer to state tournament

Six games.

Six games are all that's left for Santa Fe College until the postseason.

SFC (22-17, 11-6 Mid-Florida Conference) began Friday second in the MFC standings after suffering back-to-back losses, trailing Central Florida Community College by half a game.

The Saints beat CFCC 9-8 on Friday and realized there was more at stake than just earning a 'W.'

"Of course we want a spot in the state tournament," SFC shortstop Alex Godshall said. "Wins like this will help us get there. We just have to keep playing, hitting and pitching well."

SFC also won its game Saturday against Florida Community College at Jacksonville by a 13-1 margin. The game ended after seven innings because of a mercy rule.

SFC had a total of 13 hits against CFCC on Friday. Freshman Bobby Triglia accounted for four, and freshman Keon Broxton and sophomore Andy Mee each added three.

Mee, who pitched a one-hit ninth inning for the Saints, proved to be just as important at the plate as he was on the mound. He went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs and also earned his sixth save of the season. During his last two plate appearances, CFCC's pitchers intentionally walked Mee to avoid any more big plays.

"We beat those guys three times now, and they are a great ball club who can swing the bat," SFC coach Johnny Wiggs said. "No doubt this win was a boost of confidence for us, especially after losing two close games."

SFC will have its next home game Wednesday at 3 p.m. against Florida Community College at Jacksonville.

The Saints are currently in first place in the MFC standings, one game ahead of CFCC. The top two teams in the conference will advance to the state tournament in May.

"We are trying to worry about these last games before worrying about the playoffs, but hopefully we will be in postseason play this year," Wiggs said.
