Beginning May 5, UF students will be able to forward e-mail sent to their GatorLink e-mail addresses to outside e-mail providers such as Yahoo! or Gmail.
Along with changing its policy on e-mail forwarding, UF will also be improving its spam-blocking measures.
The change will cost UF about $300,000 this year, said Chuck Frazier, UF's interim chief information officer.
UF is changing its policy to follow student preferences, improve its spam controls and comply with the recommendation of a UF technology advisory committee. Though UF will allow e-mail forwarding, a memo sent to administrators on Monday indicated some colleges could decide not to allow the practice.
"Special circumstances may lead individual colleges/units to establish restrictions on the use of email by their students," the memo reads.
