About 200 students stripped to their skivvies at about midnight Friday after gathering on Turlington Plaza for the ninth biannual Great Underwear Dash.
After chanting UF cheers, such as "It's great to be a Florida Gator," students cast away their clothing and began counting down to the start of the run.
Dash founder and UF alumnus Beau Bergeron said the event began in spring of 2005 and said he felt it helps promote a positive body image.
UF electrical engineering senior Christian Ramirez and his friends came ready to run wearing boxer briefs, Mexican sombreros and bandannas.
For them, the dash is a proper farewell to their four years of college.
"We wanted to go out with a bang," Ramirez said.
The dashers ran up the campus side of University Avenue, where they received high-fives from people walking by and honks from passing cars.
After ending the sprint on Turlington Plaza at about 1 a.m., some students took a dip in the fountain near the College of Fine Arts, singing, cheering and posing for pictures.
Clothes from the event will be donated to Gainesville's Salvation Army, according to event organizer Jorge Gomez.
