The Friends for Life of America held their fifth annual Chomp Cancer Spring Carnival Thursday afternoon on the Reitz Union North Lawn in order to spread cancer awareness among UF students.
The free food and games drew students in, but the cause made them stay. Fact sheets hung from the tents with various statistics on cancer. There was also a memorial board for students to sign in memory of those lost to cancer or in honor of those fighting cancer. The club, which holds fundraisers throughout the year, works with cancer patients.
Alicia Garcia, a UF accounting junior and active member, described it as a place where students can get together and talk about how cancer has affected them.
Madison Beerbohm, a UF journalism junior, came to the carnival to have her hair cut for Locks of Love.
"My uncle and my grandfather both died of cancer, so it's a way for me to give back," Beerbohm said.
Brittany Shaara, a hairdresser at the Reitz Union Hair Company, volunteered to run the Locks of Love booth.
"I am here just to raise cancer awareness and for the the cause itself," Shaara said. "Any little bit helps when you are going through such an extreme process."
