Santa Fe baseball team drops two games in rain-shortened weekend

Santa Fe College (6-4) intended on playing three games between Friday and Saturday.

Mother Nature had different plans.

Friday's game against Gulf Coast Community College went off without a drop of rain in the sky.

But the Saints' doubleheader against Miami-Dade College on Saturday was halted due to a rain delay. The Saints and the Sharks completed the first of the two-game series before rain rolled in. SFC lost the first game 15-2, and umpires stopped the second game three outs away from it being ruled a win in SFC's favor.

Saturday's first game looked like it would be a repeat of Friday's contest when Miami-Dade hit a home run in the top of the first. After that, the Saints couldn't keep up.

The skies began to turn quickly on the Saints. The second game began as the wind picked up, but the rain wouldn't come in until the top of the fourth inning.

SFC smashed three home runs in the second game. Jardian Thomas and Andy Mee hit back-to-back long balls in the bottom of the first inning, helping the Saints take an early 5-2 lead going into the second.

The contest needed to reach 4 1/2 innings in order to be considered a full game, giving the Saints a much-needed win. Instead, the umpires called the game after one batter walked during the top of the fifth inning, leaving the Saints only three outs from a 7-4 record.

Typically, non-conference games will not be rescheduled due to weather, SFC coach Johnny Wiggs said.

When GCCC scored a grand slam in the first inning Friday, the Saints knew it was not their day.

"We were one pitch or one hit or one play away from winning that baseball game," Wiggs said. "I'll explain to the guys how important concentrating on every at-bat, at every pitch, at every play is."

The Commodores had 10 hits and defeated the Saints 8-5 in Friday's game.

SFC managed 13 hits and 5 runs for the game, but its three errors were the kiss of death.

"We have played really good at times, and we have played really sloppy at times," Wiggs said.
