A UF student avoided a $154 ticket and four points on his driver's license Wednesday.
"I was going to be late for class," said UF mechanical engineering student Randy Gruby. "I knew it was wrong."
Gruby got an improper pass warning from University Police officer David Miles for crossing over the yellow lines to pass a bus in front of the Reitz Union.
The University Police Department made an effort to pull over any car, motorcycle or scooter that crossed solid yellow lines to pass buses Wednesday.
From 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. UPD officers spread out across campus on bicycles, motorcycles and in cars to inform drivers about passing safety, UPD Lt. Stacy Ettel said.
The detail's goal is to inform the drivers what they are doing is wrong, not ticket them, he said.
"Our goal is education," Ettel said. "The majority of our contacts receive warnings."
Another frequent violation, Ettel said, is when scooter and motorcycle drivers pass a stopped bus by driving into the bike lane.
During the detail, Officer Will Sasser pulled over a Mazda van that drove past a barricade near Turlington Hall.
When Sasser asked for identification the driver introduced himself as James Williams and told Sasser his driver's license was suspended.
According to the UPD arrest report, when Sasser did a check on Williams, he found that Williams had a record of about 10 traffic violations.
Williams was arrested, taken to the Alachua County Jail and charged with a third-degree felony for driving with a suspended license and being a habitual offender.
