Although Student Government elections are more than a month away, the rush to register student parties began Monday.
Seven parties: Change, Gator, Orange and Blue, Progress, Reform, Swamp and Unite have put their names down so far, according to Supervisor of Elections Dan Siegel.
Five turned in paperwork about 15 minutes after the registration began at 9 a.m., he said.
"That's how it is every year," Siegel said.
He added that some party presidents camped out starting at 8 a.m. to nab their name of choice.
Two people applied to use Unite and Swamp as party names, he said.
As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, Siegel said the Swamp Party name dispute has not been settled.
Student senators recently approved legislation that gives first dibs to the party president who has used the name in question at least once in the past three semesters.
He said the number of parties registered is unusual.
"All of the party presidents are people who are pretty active on campus and I think are maybe kind of tired of the student party system," Siegel said, adding they may be disappointed with the results past parties have achieved.
