UF's Environmental Horticulture Club will host a poinsettia fundraiser off of Hull Road in the greenhouses behind UF's Fifield Hall.

Come Thursday, some customers will line up before business starts at 8 a.m. in hopes of nabbing the best selection, said Stephanie de Vos, club treasurer.

Last year, the club racked up about $15,000 from poinsettia sales, a number that included large pre-orders from local churches and UF, de Vos said.

The event is held in partnership with UF's Environmental Horticulture Department.

De Vos said the most popular color is red, but even a vivid orange poinsettia is among the roughly 130 types offered.

"I'm not sure if people would like it if it wasn't school colors," she said, eyeing the bright orange tone.

Other posh poinsettias come with names such as Sonora White Glitter and Monet Twilight.

Prices run as low as $9 for the classic red, though rarer versions such as the Ice Punch cost $28.

Although many customers toss their plants after Christmas, de Vos said she has kept her poinsettias alive since freshman year.

Nurturing the plants into their leafy glory begins in early September, she said.

To "color up" when December rolls around, the plants need controlled lighting, part-time watering by hand and to be clipped back manually with a straight razor to strengthen growth, de Vos said.
