Harn Museum displays Andy Warhol photographs

Andy Warhol's art can be seen on posters, tote bags and, thanks to a grant, at UF's Harn Museum of Art.

The Harn Museum was one of 183 colleges and universities that received 150 original Warhol Polaroid and black-and-white photographs from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.

The foundation gave each institution 150 original Warhol photographs to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The foundation's gifts are worth more than $28 million, according to a news release.

Thirty-seven Warhol photos are on display, said Kerry Oliver-Smith, Harn Museum's contemporary art curator. The photos will be added to the museum's permanent collection.

Andy Warhol was an American artist whose work celebrated and critiqued popular culture, Oliver-Smith said.

His famous works include paintings of Marilyn Monroe, Campbell's soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles.

Photos on display at the museum include subjects such as a hot dog stand, a chair and the interior of a car. The works also include black-and-white photos of celebrities such as Ozzy Osbourne and Carly Simon, she said.

The Harn Museum received the photos in summer, Oliver-Smith said. They will remain on display through May.
