Wes Hunt's column, "Bible archaic, full of contradictions," is ludicrous. Every contradiction he quoted was either taken out of context or completely ignorant.
First, in Genesis 19:4-10, the Sodomites attack Lot's house with plans to rape Lot's guests. Instead, he offers his daughters as sacrifice to protect his guests from rape. In the end, the Sodomites' wickedness is demonstrated; they would rather rape men than have consenting virgin women.
Second, the Bible does not encourage slavery. The bible preaches that slave owners should treat their slaves with respect. Additionally, the Bible states in Acts 2:16-18 there will be no distinction between servants and masters when the Holy Spirit is poured out (which truly contradicted cultural norms).
Third, there is no evidence that Matthew and Luke differ by 10 years on account of when Jesus was born; this is just Internet pseudo-scholarship.
I do acknowledge there are minor linguistic flaws in the translation of the Bible, but the meaning is flawless. The sovereign God created humans. We sinned, which separates us from God. God loved us so much that he would send his son to die for us so that whoever believes in Him would live in covenant relationship with him forever.
I encourage Wes to keep writing articles that "contradict" the Bible. Maybe someday he will begin to understand the other 99.9 percent of the Word.
